Real Wedding at Kleinevalleij {Mariette & Sarel}

Batten down the hatches, because there’s a whole storm of wedding awesomeness heading your way. First, let me just nail my colours to the mast – I have a total nautical style obsession at the moment. Something about the colour navy, boats, bunting and shiny ships’ bells gets my inner preppy all adither. So when I saw today’s wedding, with its nautical colour scheme and pretty navy, white and grey details and OMG a compass motif on the dancefloor, it’s fair to say I fell stern over bow. And you guys, it’s not just nautical. It’s also travel themed! Now don’t pretend you’re not all jumping up and down excited, because I see my webstats, and I know how many of you all are searching for travel-themed wedding details. So I know you are going to LOVE the cut of Mariette and Sarel’s jib (so to speak) as much as I do. Which is a LOT. Plus, they had it at one of my favourite venues, Kleinevalleij. PLUS, it was shot by a photographer I have been wanting to feature since I started Cap Classique, the very lovely Lizelle Lotter. I’ve been dying to share this one with you for ages, and the moment is here. Anchors away!

From the bride:
My husband, Sarel, and I are both final year medical students at Stellenbosch University. We’ve been in the same class since first year, but only became really close friends in our third year. We started dating and knew right from the start that we were meant for each other – nine months later we got engaged! Sarel is very romantic and always thinks of new ways to surprise and spoil me, so I wasn’t suspicious when he surprised me one Saterday morning with a horseride on Noordhoek’s Long Beach. After the ride we got off the horses on the beach because Sarel said he wanted to have a walk along the sand before we went back. As we headed back to the car he led me over some dunes and there were rose petals everywhere and a white tent with some flowers, champagne and sushi (he arranged for our good friends to do the set-up while we were horse riding!). After a while he got out his guitar and me sang a song by Lucas Maree called “Droomvrou” and ended the song by asking me to marry him. Through all the tears and laughter I managed to say yes; it was such a special day!

Our colours for the wedding were midnight/navy blue, grey and white. Our theme was based on maps and directions. The reason for this was, I am from Namibia and Sarel from Potchefstroom and it is so amazing how the roads and decisions in our lives led us to each other. Our monogram was a compass and our table numbers were the different directions like North, South, East, West.

KleineValleij was the perfect venue for us – not only is the view breathtaking, but the venue in itself is like a blank canvas and works really well with any theme and colours. It worked perfectly with the theme of our wedding.

After months of planning it was so nice seeing how everything played out on the day. Everything was perfect, just as we imagined it. One of the special moments was when I walked into the church and Werner Denner (our musician/DJ for the day) played the wedding march on his saxophone, it was something different and really sounded awesome! Walking down the aisle was really the most memorable part of the day! The marimba band that played during the pre-dinner drinks were also one of the first things we booked for our wedding and they were brilliant, the guests really enjoyed that.
Then at the reception, after Sarel’s speech, he surprised me with a song he had written, it was so romantic! The whole day was magical, looking back I can say without a doubt it was the wedding of my dreams and we had such fun!

To future brides… I had a book in which I wrote down all the ideas I got and the exact feel and theme I wanted for my wedding. Whenever i saw a picture of something I liked i would print it out and paste it in my book> I made “inspiration boards” for everything – this helped me a lot when trying to explain to service providers want I wanted for my decor and stationery, as it gave them a better idea of the bigger picture. I drew a lot of inspiration from wedding blogs and magazines!

Looking back, money well worth spending is on a good photographer, a videographer, a DJ and the caterer. It is definitely worth it getting a good wedding co-ordinator! Izandi from I Do Weddings put us in contact with the best service providers and we were so relaxed before the wedding because we knew she had everything under control. We enjoyed our wedding so much because everything went smoothly and we didn’t need to worry about a thing.

Thank you so much, Mariette and Sarel! I’m so excited for you that your paths eventually crossed, and wishing you calm waters and smooth sailing as you head into your future together. A massive thank you to Lizelle – you can see more on her fabulous blog here.
