Plum Festival Themed Wedding at Rhebokskloof by Monica Dart

I love it when I come across a couple that chooses to do their wedding differently. I love it even more when they don’t just do it to be cool or unique, but to reflect the things that mean something to them or share a part of their history with their friends and family. Rebecca and Jacques are one of those couples – they met at a music festival a couple of years ago, so for their wedding day decided to recreate that carefree summer vibe complete with a lakeside picnic and an awesome live band that had their guests dancing on the grass late into the night. In fact, I am totally jealous of anyone who got to go to this wedding, since it looks like so much FUN! Fortunately, the super lovely Monica Dart was there to capture the day through her photos, and she’s done an amazing job of bringing it to life. Enjoy!

We met in 2008 at the Rocking the Daisies music festival in Darling – it was instant attraction and we spent the weekend chatting, dancing and being mesmerised by each other! The rest, as they say, was history. In August 2009 we booked into a secluded cottage in St. Helena Bay to take our two dogs out of the city and on a weekend away – Jacques proposed amidst the fynbos with the dogs at our feet, overlooking the natural views of the valley below. It was magical!

First and foremost we wanted a picnic wedding outside. This meant it was entirely weather dependent and we had to perform sun dances for weeks in advance! Once we knew what we wanted, a suitable venue was next on the list. Again, there was only one place that would work: Rhebokskloof in Agter Paarl. Having been there for a picnic the summer before, I knew that the willow trees and English countryside lake would make the perfect setting.

The actual look and feel of the day stemmed from my obsession with purple and more recent love of black and white. Having stumbled across the damask print earlier in the year, the combination of the two gave the decor a stylish yet casual and chilled-out feel. I loved the happy outdoor vibe the concept and layout created.

We exchanged vows in a beautifully intimate ceremony under the lace- trimmed gazebo before enjoying some incredible live music with our guests. Our band, Good Luck, had performed at Rocking the Daisies the year before we met, and were the ideal entertainment to kick-start the dancing to electronic jazz under the stars with no shoes on the grass!

My advice to other couples is that knowing what you want from the get-go is handy: we looked at one venue, I tried on one wedding dress and we knew the vibe and colour scheme we wanted before we began, which eliminated a lot of hassle. Also, if you’re on a budget (as we were) but want the full effect, do it yourself. We did everything from finding the material to make the damask cushions (which doubled up as gifts for the guests) to setting up the decor and lighting on the morning of the wedding (stressful but it certainly added to the day’s experience and excitement). We also made our own Save the Dates and wedding invites and sent them via email.
