One of the biggest flower trends at the moment, is the no flower trend – ironic, no? Don’t get me wrong- I am still crazy in love with beautiful floral arrangements, but for eco-friendly, organic, woodland and botanical style, or even simply budget brides, this is a seriously cool alternative right now. We’ve already seen how lovely green garlands look, and now fabulous foliage is making its mark in bouquets as well. All of these bouquets have no or minimal flowers, and they’re all just darling! You heard it here first: foliage is the new flowers.
I never thought I would (actually, make that: fervently hoped I would not) be inspired by anything that Kimye did, ever. They are just the worst. But what can I say, the floral wall at their ceremony last year kind of rocked. And it just happens to be one of 2015’s biggest trends (along with floral arches). And OKAY, I admit it, I am loving it. Flower walls are just so over-the-top pretty, and they make an incredibly gorgeous statement piece for either a ceremony or a reception (or both!). Happy public holiday lovelies! Today in our countdown of 2014 favourites we are all about bouquets (my best!). Last year I called 2013 the year of proteas, but this year (although we’ve seen lots of gorgeous inclusions of our national flower), I’ve seen the most colour and variety and general gorgeousness yet. Cascade bouquets (as predicted!) have been huge, and speaking of huge, I’m loving how big and bold some of you have decided to go with your blooms. We’re continuing our week of Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but after rounding up some beeyooodeefool blush dresses yesterday, this afternoon we are all about the flowers. Don’t get me wrong – I love bouquets in a variety of colours, and pink actually goes brilliantly with most of them, but I’ve loved looking for these pink-shades-only bunches. *UPDATED FOR 2021* I did a post on the language of flowers a few years ago, when Kate Middleton selected the blooms for her bouquet to represent various sentiments, and I thought it was about time to update it and introduce some of you to a beautiful tradition you might not be aware of. In fact, the language of flowers goes back about 200 years, and was especially popular in the Victorian era, when young ladies consulted one of the many flower dictionaries available at the time in constructing their ‘tussie-mussies’. These days the interest in ‘florigraphy’ has largely been lost, but I think it’s a super romantic vintage tradition to bring into your wedding (as this real bride did to gorgeous effect) and a really sweet, meaningful way to construct your bouquet. You can find meanings for dozens of blooms online, but today I’ve drawn together ten of our favourite wedding flowers together with their meanings, which come from The Knot Book of Wedding Flowers by Carley Rooney. And some gorgeous wedding flowers to get swoony over too, of course!

I’ve been hearing lots of rumours in the SA wedding industry that this summer is going to be the summer of yellow weddings, and I for one couldn’t be happier to see this happy shade go mainstream. It reminds me of a friend at university who had a bright yellow dress, and every time she wore it, said she noticed how everyone smiled at her – literally, it’s a colour that makes you smile. Morning, lovelies! We have been having some hosting problems, so the schedule is a bit out of whack, but never mind – today is just going to be FULL of inspiration! We’re starting off with a roundup of no less that 25 gorgeous bouquets incorporating one of our favourite South African flowers, the pincushion protea. Since I first wrote about this spiky bloom a few years back, I’ve been delighted to see it used in some really creative and beautiful ways, so I thought it was about time I shared them. If you’d like a very South African feeling to your flowers, but are a bit over King Proteas, then this is a great choice.
A few years ago, when baby’s breath first became popular again, I remember thinking that this might mean that some other low-cost fillers may also have their day in the sun, but I must admit, that I never would have predicted ferns as the next big thing in weddings. Not to the same degree, of course, but there’s no doubt that these lovely bits of greenery have been enjoying a very stylish turn on the worldwide bridal stage of late. That’s partly to do with how perfectly they fit in with the botanical trend, partly to do with the move towards greenery and garlands (see our roundup of that here), and a lot to do with the fact that they’re really pretty and versatile (and of course, relatively lower cost). As much as I advocate hiring great wedding pros and then trusting them to do their job for you, you’ll want to give them an indication of the kind of styles and ideas you have in mind. Pics are great, but there’s some wedding-speak that will help communicate those ideas (so that you’re not like me at a hairdresser: “short, but not, like, short short”) and that’s what this glossary is all about.
