Real Wedding at the Stellenbosch Hofmeyrsaal {Mona & Paul}

We’re kicking off this week’s weddings with a sweet and sunny celebration from Maree Louw of Natural Light Photography. Pinks and purples are a popular colour combination for South African brides at the moment, and they’re the perfect complement to the Cape sunshine that blessed today’s couple on their wedding day! I especially love the use of bougainvillea flowers tucked into the napkins and filling baskets for confetti. It makes such a difference when a couple thinks outside of the box when it comes to which flowers they use – although I adore the classics like roses and peonies, there’s something very fresh about spotting something a little more unexpected, and bouganvilleas just scream summer to me. (And, since we’re having a last late burst of summer here in the UK, it perfectly matches my mood. Now, if I just had an ice cream…)

The key thing for Mona was that she wanted to keep things simple and be relaxed on her day, concentrating on the man she was marrying and not fussing too much about the details. She and Paul’s relationship started in the Jonkershoek mountains near Stellenbosch (both of them were mountain biking) and so it was the perfect place for them to start married life together. They chose their local church (the beautiful Stellenbosch Moedergemeente) for the ceremony and had the reception at the church hall around the corner. And on the day, the town put on its best clothes and blessed them with one of those perfect Stellenbosch summer afternoons. At the reception, guests were greeted by tables decked out in crisp white linens, silver candleabras and flowers in white, soft pink and green, with little touches of blue.

It was the perfect affair combining the loves and talents of the couple. Paul works in the wine industry and so he chose the best tasting wines for the tables. The food they served came from the farm where he grew up – they served gemsbok and mutton – and this made the meal even more special for Mona and Paul and their guests. Mona designed all the wedding stationery herself, incorporating her favourite thing – flowers. As she says: “I am very fond of flowers – my nickname is ‘blom’ (flower)”. Mona wanted a huge bouquet “like in the old days which our grandmothers had”, and she just loved the results of Hermien from Flowers in the Foyer’s creative work. But at the end of the day it was the couple’s family and friends – relationships Mona says are some of the most important things in their lives – who helped to make the day so special.

Thank you Mona and Paul for sharing your day with us! Wishing you many more happy days in your future!
