SBB on Wedding Chicks

Hooray, I can finally let you all in on what has been making me feel butterflies of excitement all day! You may remember a while ago (a long while ago, like, last year – okay, you probably don’t remember) that I mentioned I was styling a shoot with Anneli Marinovich and a really wonderful team of UK suppliers at Gaynes Park, and today it all gets shared online (we’ve been lucky enough to already have a couple of magazine features, and even a cover!). And I couldn’t be happier than to have it on one of my absolute favourite wedding blogs, only one of the Top 3 in the world, Wedding Chicks! How. Cool. Is. That?

I’ll be sharing the shoot here in a few weeks’ time, but why wait when you can head over and enjoy the full feature (Pinterest fingers at the ready!) right now. Huge thanks to everyone who made this shoot so awesome (and so much fun).

The Editorial Wedding Recap (Part 1)

The Editorial Wedding Class of 2013, image by Anneli Marinovich

I am SO HOTDAMN EXCITED to be sharing todays posts with all of you, brides-to-be and industry peeps alike. Pictures from my first ever workshop, the debut of The Editorial Wedding (or the EdWed, as it came to be known). You may remember me mentioning this a few months back, but in case you don’t, The Editorial Wedding was a workshop and styled shoot for wedding photographers to learn everything they needed to know about shooting editorially and submitting their work successfully to magazines and blogs. Today I finally get to share it with all of you – and photographers in the UK and SA, please be sure to read all the way to the end for a very special announcement! This morning I’m showcasing the awesome students’ work (click through to their websites to see more of their portfolios) and this afternoon I’ll be sharing the full styled shoot.Read More

August on SBB…

Well, lovelies, it’s almost time for me to say goodbye for a little while, kind of (because just LOOK at a sneak peek of what’s coming – you won’t even know I’m gone!). I know things have been quiet this week, as I have been packing up my house, but the ironic thing is that the reason I hadn’t got round to it before is that for the last six weeks I have been working non-stop on August’s content. A lot of late nights y’all. Because I’m a total sucker for punishment (and I love my readers), I didn’t just want to give you a month of archive and stand-in posts, but the best darn two-posts-a-day brand new awesome content I could find. I am pretty excited about it, actually. It’s all lined up and ready to go (assuming tech gremlins don’t take it out, but I have some help making sure that doesn’t happen – thanks Louise!). I hope you love it. I hope you have a WONDERFUL August. And I hope you don’t email me, because I am going to be 100% off the grid, and I won’t answer you. Sorry. Don’t take it personally. I’ll be somewhere on a vineyard in Tuscany, getting dirt under my fingernails and poetry back into my soul. I really, really need a break. And by the time I’m back I’ll be aching to bring you all kinds of new loveliness and get cracking on some projects I have in mind for when I am in South Africa. Can’t wait.

So! Wish me luck, and I’ll see you in a month. :)

Recent Press

Before this Sunday comes to an end (although on this side of the equator with the sun still out, it feels like it might be endless), I wanted to share some recent press that SouthBound Bride has been delighted to have. I only do a select number of photoshoots every year, so I’m always really thrilled when they get featured in print and online, and especially so when they get picked up way beyond what we’d initially hoped!

WEDDING FLOWERS

First up is a gorgeous shoot I did with Anneli Marinovich late last year, which you’ll be seeing more of soon. It has been featured in the May/June issue of Wedding Flowers, which both Anneli and I are delighted by. There were SUCH gorgeous details on this shoot (even if we had to battle some wind to shoot them!) so if you’re in the UK make sure you pick up a copy while you still have a chance, as it’s almost time for the new issue.Read More

How to Create a Winning Submission for SouthBound Bride

A smiley moment with my fab EdWed ladies, Anneli & Louise (pic: Maxeen Kim)

It’s FRIDAY! But before I bring you some bridey inspiration (and boy oh boy, will you love the inspiration I have today), I wanted to do a post for my fellow industry peeps, specifically photographers and co-ordinators, and even fellow bloggers. As you may remember, this week saw the first ever Editorial Wedding Workshop at the fab Cannizaro House, a new venture I put together with photographer Anneli Marinovich and stylist and blogger Louise of b.loved. It’s always a bit scary to do something new, and I must admit that since I was handling all the morning’s teaching, I was a little terrified I would just bore all the students to death. Fortunately, it seems we all pulled it off – one of our lovely students Charlie has already written a lovely post about her day, and feedback from the rest of the class was just as nice. *blushes* We have more workshops in the pipeline (and psst… not just in the UK) but in the meantime, I thought I would tell you a bit of what the day was all about. The Editorial Wedding is all about getting published (both in print and online), publishing and submitting effectively, building relationships and personal branding, and learning to shoot in an editorial way to give yourself the best chance of success. Every day (and I really do mean every day) I see photographers and other suppliers make basic mistakes that mean their work doesn’t get featured, or missed opportunities to promote their businesses effectively. I’m a huge believer in sharing the knowledge I have gained with others (each one teach one, as Miranda Bailey would say), so I thought it was about time I went into a bit more detail about what makes a winning blog submission, with particular reference to SBB. And shared some of the Instagram pics from the day with you as well!Read More

The Editorial Wedding: Announcing the EdWed Scholarship

By now you’ll probably know all about The Editorial Wedding (especially if you’re a photographer – at least I HOPE you’ll know all about it by now!). Behind the scenes, we’re planning up a storm to make our first workshop amazing, and I can’t wait! But Anneli and I also really believe in supporting small businesses, so we’re really excited about today’s announcement.

We’re giving away a scholarship to attend our EdWed workshop on 9 April at the beautiful Cannizaro House in Wimbledon. Lunch and refreshments, a full day of teaching, and the most gosh-darn-gorgeous styled shoot will all be included, as well as a take-home guide to blogs and mags – worth £325. It’s everything you need to know about shooting and submitting for publication, and to get you fired up and in the editorial mindset. It’s a brilliant opportunity for a photographer who has the technical expertise, but maybe not the cash to make it happen right now.

SO. Here’s how it works. If you would like to enter, just head over to the Editorial Wedding facebook page and leave us a comment telling us about your business, and how winning the scholarship will help and inspire you. We’ll announce a winner early next week.

And if you want to make sure of your place, drop us a mail at [email protected] to book as places are still available.

The Editorial Wedding: Sneak Peek

If you’ve been following along here, you’ll know that it’s not long now until SBB together with Anneli Marinovich will be hosting our very first workshop – The Editorial Wedding. It’s all about getting your photography published, and I have so much exciting stuff to share on the day. One of these (the most exciting, in fact) is the styled shoot being put together by the lovely Louise of b.loved with a crack team of suppliers. When we started planning EdWed, I asked Louise to put together a shoot that would get her excited, and get photographers excited, full of details and gorgeousness and the things we wedding people dream of pretty much all day and all night. A week later, we had the following conversation.

Gaby: “Hey Louise, so what sort of look do you think we’ll be going for?”

Louise: “It’s kind of Kate Spade meets Elizabeth Messina.”

Then she said a lot of other things about colour and pattern and table arrangements and ceremony areas, but I’d kind of stopped listening.

Gaby: “Dude, you had me at Kate Spade and Elizabeth Messina.”

So that’s all I’m going to say to you too. And if you’re anything like me, that’s all you’ll need. What I will say is that everytime I get one of Louise’s style boards, or when we sat last week discussing details over champers at Cannizaro House (our fantastic workshop venue), I want to make a lot of happy squealing noises. And also, I’m seriously considering finding a husband in the next three weeks, just so I can get married in Louise’s setup. It’s going to be gorgeous. Photographers: you should be there.

To get you excited, we’re sharing a few pins from Louise’s super secret Pinterest board this week (head over to b.loved and the EdWed facebook page for more, and Anneli will be sharing one soon too). Here’s mine :)

The Editorial Wedding will be held on 9 April 2013 at Cannizaro House. Cost is £325 including lunch and a takeaway guide to UK and international publications – for full details please see our website. Not much time now, so if you’re interested please drop us a line at [email protected].

A Bride Abroad #10: The Ceremony

With a little less than two weeks to go till the BIG DAY, I must admit the nerves are starting to creep in. I thought I had everything so well organised and prepared that I would come home and just RELAX. Well that was an interesting plan… The little details are keeping me quite busy, but I am enjoying every day. The weather has been amazing, people have been amazing and this country is just amazing in general. I have also been completely spoilt by two kitchen teas and a super-duper bachelorettes with the coolest personal touches. So I’m having a rad time! I can’t believe the wedding is next weekend – every time that thought pops into my head, my heart makes a little jump and my stomach whirls with excitement. And nerves. But that’s what the rescue remedy is for, right? Now getting back to those formalities…

The Editorial Wedding: Update

Hello friends! Last week, I made the very exciting announcement that, together with photographer Anneli Marinovich, I was launching a workshop for photographers called The Editorial Wedding, which will include a styled shoot from the extremely talented Louise of b.loved. We’ve been so thrilled with the feedback we’ve had from everyone (especially some requests for a repeat workshop in South Africa – watch this space!) including a shedload of enthusiastic blogger friends here in the UK, and we can’t wait to share everything we have in store with our participants. I’ll be giving you a sneak peek into Louise’s shoot (you guys, seriously, it is AMAZING) next week, but today I wanted to announce that our venue for The Editorial Wedding (or the EdWed as we’ve been calling it!) will be Wimbledon’s own Cannizaro House.

Cannizaro is a real little jewel of South West London – many of us know it as the perfect place to have a high tea with the girls, a romantic dinner with your fella or to relax in the beautiful grounds on a sunny summer afternoon. But it’s also a beautiful wedding venue, with all the charm of the countryside but the convenience of being so close to central London (and only a short distance from Wimbledon station). The suites and function rooms are gorgeous (I’m especially a fan of the different wallpaper looks they’ve chosen!), the food is delicious and we’re so looking forward to making it our ‘home’ on workshop day, 9 April.

So, photographers! If you’re still on the fence about booking a place, what are you waiting for? We have so much knowledge to share with you, and so much gorgeousness for you to get stuck into with your cameras. It’s going to be a very full (but very satisfying and inspiring) day. Tickets cost £325 – all details are on our website.

Huge thanks to the fantastic staff at Cannizaro for accommodating us! See you soon!
