The Editorial Wedding

EXCITEMENT! I have a little announcement today that I have been looking forward to for some time. Since I started SouthBound Bride three years ago, my mission has been threefold. One, to inspire and support all of you lovely brides (which hopefully, I do every day). Two, to promote South Africa as a wedding destination. And finally, to promote the amazing talents of the South African wedding industry. This year will be seeing a few big moves in that direction, and today is the first. Ladies and gents, allow me to introduce The Editorial Wedding.

What is The Editorial Wedding?
Put simply, it’s a way of looking at wedding photography through an editor’s eyes. Many photographers take beautiful pictures, and many want to promote their business through publication both in print and online, but not all know how to go about doing this. Which publication to choose, which pictures to submit and how to do so through effective pitches and networking. With competition growing each year in the industry, this is the knowledge I have seen take photographers to the next level, strengthening individual brands and creating international opportunities. As an editor, I see the mistakes made and opportunities missed every day, but I want my photographer friends to make their businesses everything they can be! I’m dying to share the tools and insider tips I’ve learned to help them get published.

But my knowledge as an editor is just half of the equation. Knowing how to shoot a wedding in an editorial way is just as important. Using details to tell a story, making the most of what’s available, framing the narrative. Each photographer has their own style (and every wedding is different), but those who are consistently published are able to do so not just because they shoot beautiful weddings, but because they know what to shoot. And when I think of a photographer who has used these skills to create a powerful marketing engine for her business, I think of Anneli Marinovich. Anneli has been published in multiple magazines and blogs (including SouthBound Bride), and she has an amazing understanding of where she’d like her business to go and how to take it there – bloggers love working with her, because she really ‘gets it’.

Today, I’m thrilled to announce that Anneli and I have joined together to launch The Editorial Wedding: Getting Your Photography Published, a brand new workshop for photographers. Our very first full-day workshop will be next month (9 April) here in London! Even better, the workshop will include a styled shoot by the awesome Louise of b.loved!

What will the workshop cover?

  • how to add an editorial element to your wedding photography, making the most of design, details and context
  • which images to submit for publication, and which to save for your portfolio or for the couple’s album
  • differences between blog and magazine submission and publication
  • where to submit your work, and how to give yourself the best chance of success
  • common mistakes and how not to make them
  • how to network and build your profile so that editors find you
  • how to make the most out of publication and use it to build your brand.

Participants will have lots of time to ask questions, take photographs at the styled shoot and get to know their fellow photographers. They’ll also be taking home a ‘cheat sheet’ guide to UK and international publications to keep handy for whenever they have images ready to submit.

Cost for the workshop is £325 (including lunch). Places are limited – find out more and book on www.theeditorialwedding.com or head over to our Facebook page.

Real Life Bride #9: The Bridesmaids

I suppose there are many different ways of deciding on the people that you’ll have walking down the aisle before you and many factors play a role in this (sometimes difficult) decision. Some stick to family members, some to friends, some choose according to what the budget allows or how many groomsmen the groom will have. I didn’t set myself any rules. My two sisters are a pair of amazingly awesome, beautiful, fantastic ladies who I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. Naturally, they would have to be bridesmaids. But I also want my bestest friends to be by my side as they are the pillars on which I rely in life. So I’m going to have five bridesmaids. Yes, it has its complications in terms of the dresses, time schedule, budget, etc. but I wouldn’t change anything. I’m a very determined person so I figured I would make it work despite the odds.

SouthBound Sundays {3 Feb 2013}

Hello friends! How are you all doing? Hope your weekend has been nice and chilled, as mine has. Just after I finish this off, I’m about to head off to the kitchen and cook up a lovely batch of chicken cacciatore – perfect for what is a very chilly winter day! Then I may curl up with a Murder She Wrote marathon (don’t judge, Jessica’s ma girl) while I finish off the prettiness for the week – can’t wait to share! I also have a couple of special little projects I’m hoping to finally get off the ground soon, so here’s hoping it’s a productive week!

Victoria Grech Masterclass Workshop

Hello lovelies! I have an absolutely gorgeous styled shoot coming up for you today, but before I post it, I wanted to tell you a bit more about where it came from. At the end of last year, I was invited to a very special workshop by Nicola of Propose PR – the kind of invitation that makes me so glad to be a blogger! UK photographer Victoria Grech was offering a one-day photography masterclass, just for us blog and planner types. Now, I’m not the world’s worst photographer, but it’s definitely no talent of mine. My dad is an awesome photographer, and luckily he’s taught me a lot, but as a result, I tend to just latch on to the same composition and overuse it. And I can honestly say I’ve never used a single camera on any setting other than ‘Auto’. At the same time, there are often bits and pieces I’d love to be able to take a quick pic of for the blog, but they always stand out as completely rubbish next to all the professional beauties. So I thought this workshop was basically the best idea ever.Read More

A Bride Abroad #8: The Bride’s Accessories

So peeps, to go with the dress I don’t yet have, I’ve only looked into the possibilities and gotten some ideas together, but in the accessory department things aren’t quite sorted yet either. With nine weeks to go I guess I need to get cracking on it! Looking at the various options one has these days, one can wear pretty much whatever one wants. Which I think is great – no more abiding by the rules and wearing something which doesn’t suit you just because it’s expected of you. But, I must add that I’m a believer in not gilding the lily. If the dress is going to be a statement item, the complementary parts have to be more subtle (the emphasis here is on the word complementary). If you’re opting for a big necklace or some other attention-drawing accessory, it’s important that the dress hasn’t got too much detail.

A Bride Abroad #7: The Dress

Ooooooh yes! It’s time to write about… drumroll tsshh… THE DRESS!!!! I’ve been waiting for this one to come round in sheer anticipation. Not quite sure why though, because I myself don’t yet know what my wedding dress is going to look like. Eek!

Because it’s being made in Cape Town, I won’t know until very shortly before the wedding. The bonus is that I get some extra time to decide, which is great, because my ideas have changed so much over the past few months. Who knows what I’ll end up wearing…

What I do know is that I’m not one for many layers and loads of lace. No petticoat. No tight bust in which I cannot breath. No scratchy fabric. No long trail. I’m a very practical person and therefore cannot afford to choose a dress which is going to be a hassle. That said, it still has to be gorgeous.

I love a dress which in essence is plain, but has small details which make it interesting. A splash of colour, an interesting neckline, different fabrics folding over one another. We’ll see what the future holds… While you wait, I leave you with these beautiful photies.

A Bride Abroad #6: The Photography

Whenever I chat to someone who’s been in a lengthy, happy marriage about their wedding day they get this little sparkle in their eyes and as they are taken back to that special day they reach for their wedding album. Then starts the trip down memory lane – the dress, the food, the “oh look how so-and-so looked back then”, the fond memories and small details….it’s all there in the pictures.

The Question: Favourite Festive Traditions

First of all, a huge HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all my SouthBound Brides! Hope you had a lovely day, and an especial shoutout to those of you who got engaged under the mistletoe! I’ve had a very chilled day (and I do mean chilled – rain galore in London) and full to the gills with delicious food (homemade chocolate fondant, nailed it!) I have just settled down to watch the Downton Abbey Christmas special and to share a tiny bit of inspiration from our fabulous sponsors, who I have asked: What’s your favourite festive tradition? I love hearing about their Christmas traditions, and have even included one of my own! Here’s hoping that whatever traditions you incorporated this year, you had a wonderful time, and here’s to good things in 2013. (PS Just to up the pretty stakes, I have included some of my absolute favourite Christmas tables from around the blogs this year, yay!)

A Bride Abroad #5: Flowers & Decor

Flowers. Fleurs. Blumen. Flores. Blodau. Kukkia. Fiori. Blomme. It all comes down to the same thing: those little bits of fresh prettiness without which a party just won’t be complete. There is so much you can do to make your wedding beautiful, but the flowers play a central role. Place a glass pot with fresh flowers in any room and it just brightens up. The wonderful thing is that the possibilities are endless. Starting with the array of different flowers and colours to choose from, to how you present them, you can have whatever you want. Literally. It’s difficult not to get carried away.

Featured in Wedding Album

One of the things that has been BEYOND exciting this year, is that SouthBound Bride has received some lovely press coverage, both in South Africa and the UK. This has been a big goal of mine, and I feel really proud that I have been able to work with some really amazing magazines with hopefully more to come in 2013. So far it’s been styled shoots, but I’m very excited about a different kind of feature that’s in the latest issue of Wedding Album, which is on South African shelves right now. A few months back, the lovely WA team asked if I would answer a few questions, and I’m thrilled to be included in their roundup of industry pros discussing the latest trends and what inspires us. It made me feel properly proud. Head over to your nearest newsagent to pick up a copy or download a digimag as I did!) and let me know what you think! And a huge thank you both to Monica Dart (who took the pic of me) and to Wedding Album for allowing me to participate. :)Read More
