Thrift Shop Engagement Session

This afternoon I have a lovely, unique engagement shoot for you and a new photographer to introduce you to. Laura Jane Photography is based in Gauteng, and is one of the photographers I’m super stoked to be able to work with now that SBB has gone national. She went with today’s couple, Fransa & Grové, to Bellbottoms in Pretoria, a super cute and kitschy thrift shop in Pretoria. I love the intimacy of these pictures, even in a public space, and the way this couple clearly just love spending time together! You can see even more of the shoot over on Laura Jane’s blog.Read More

Inspiration Board: Sand & Stripes

Happy Monday, folks! I’ve been jonesing to do this inspiration board ever since I was myself inspired by this shoot in the latest Sweet Paul magazine (which you should totally check out if you haven’t already). You probably already know I’m a fan of nautical style, but I loved combining that with soft dirty orange and sand, for a wedding that would be equal parts beach rustic and South of France stylishness. Striped dresses for your bridesmaids (and peep toes for you), navy suits for the boys, and wooden tables right on the beach with flowers in soft corals and peaches. I can just imagine a bride in a chic short dress, and isn’t the rope hair accessory darling? (This post contains affiliate links)

Five Brides

Good morning friends! I have something a little different for you today, but I absolutely love it! A trash-the-dress/rock-the-frock session with a difference! I was intrigued when I spotted these pics over on Joanne Markland‘s blog, of five bonny brides walking along a Cape Town beach. It turned out that this was a very special photo shoot put together by five cousins: Hailey, Melissa, Leigh, Rene and Robynne-Leigh. The girls decided that, once the last of them got married, they would all get back into their wedding dresses one more time and have photographs taken together. Jo shot Robynne’s wedding last year, and soon after, the cousins came to her with their idea.

Unfortunately on the day it was extremely windy and cold, but this didn’t dampen anyone’s excitement and enthusiasm as they put on their sneakers and played princess on Sunset Beach near Milnerton. As they said: “it was great fun and created memories… ones we will never forget”.

What do you think? Would you rock the frock with your besties?Read More

Real Wedding at Glen Carlou {Rochelle & Henry-John}

So a couple of weeks ago, I got behind the idea of a brunch wedding, and you guys have been loving it. I think one of the reasons is that it offers an alternative to a full scale canapes-cocktails-sit-down-meal-dance-all-night reception (much as I love them), and that can be a great thing not just for budget reasons, but also for brides and grooms who are hosting on a Sunday and don’t want to send their guests home drunk on a school night, or want to make use of a venue that wouldn’t cater to an evening crowd, or just want a different sort of vibe. Brunch is one option, but today’s bride and groom got creative and decided to host a high tea reception for their party. Not only did the two chocoholics get to serve their favourite kind of food (and just check out the spread here), but they also achieved a laid-back daytime vibe at pretty Glen Carlou wine estate. Guests didn’t have to worry about formal table settings, but could sit and chat with their goodies at a number of smaller tables and other seating areas. It’s all so civilised. And it doesn’t hurt that Rochelle and Henry-John played up the pretty high tea inspiration using details like a ‘tree’ of hanging teacups to complement their black and white colour scheme. I’m all about making it your day, your way, and this is one couple who lived that philosophy completely. The lovely Taryn Ward was there to take pictures.Read More

Watercolour Wedding Details

Good morning wedding belles! We’ll have another fabulous South African wedding on the blog this afternoon, but in the meantime, I wanted to share some fresh inspiration. First there was the pastel trend, then ombre, so it shouldn’t really be a surprise that watercolour-style design has been one of the biggest trends to emerge in 2012. It’s everywhere, from gasp-inducingly beautiful invitations and other paper elements, to cakes, decor and even to bridesmaids dresses. It’s soft and romantic, and heart-stoppingly pretty. I know you’re going to love it.

Here’s a roundup of all my favourite watercolour details – look out in the credits for the DIYs and printables (in bold), as this is a look you can pull off on any budget!

Real Wedding at Shalwyn {Taryn & Lloyd}

So, you know how sometimes you think you are totally over someone, and then one day you see them in a new light and suddenly you find yourself thinking about them all over again and you have to admit you’ve loved them all along? No, I am not talking Made in Chelsea (because Louise, Louise, why WOULD you?). I am talking fairy lights. See, there was a point where I felt a bit blah about them – like maybe they dated along with chair covers. So I put them to one side and got on with my life. But everytime I’d see them at a wedding, I would still get a little thrill. And recently, that little thrill has turned into a full blown crush. And now I admit it, I still love them. They’re just so… twinkly. So you’ll understand why today’s wedding got me all a-fluster, because the whole thing is full of twinkly twinkliness. I don’t know if that’s because Taryn & Lloyd chose rustic Shalwyn in the Tala Valley, KZN, as their venue, and the lights really shine against the barn-style surroundings. Or if it’s the fact that they’re reflected in the crystal ‘trees’ they had adorning every table (tying nicely into their little bird theme). Or just the fact that the couple are so shiny and happy themselves. But whichever, this wedding makes me feel all sparkly. Fields of Gold Engagement Shoot

I looooove this shoot. It’s so chilled out and dreamy; I feel like Sting should be playing in the background when I look at it. Simple ingredients: a couple in love + a field + awesome photographers Modern Hearts. Can’t go wrong!

Peter-Allan and Nicolene met at a mini-market – Nicolene says she fell in love with his voice before anything else! He surprised her with a proposal on a weekend away in Redelinghuys, right in the middle of town during an evening stroll. And of course, she said yes!Read More

Real Wedding at Zorgvliet {Suzanne & Jason}

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream! Colour schemes, that is (ice cream scheme? try saying that after a couple of martinis). I’ve been hearing a lot recently about ice cream colours, and I absolutely love the idea of combining soft pastels for a colourful but gentle palette. Today’s bride is totally bringing it, and shows you exactly how this look is done in a way that is classy and elegant, as befits her beautiful wine farm venue (Zorgvliet). Mismatched bridesmaids dresses? She’s managed to find six that couldn’t look better together, except that she also matched them up with adorable shoes. Stunning florals in peach, lilac, violet, coral, cream. Supercute stationery. A beautiful cake. And sweet little touches like candy-striped pink toffee favours, and burlap texturing on the place settings. It is SERIOUSLY pretty, and I can’t wait to share it! So here we go… (Psst! This wedding also sees a welcome return to SBB for talented documentary photographers, Love Made Visible. Always awesome to have you guys here!)Read More

Supplier Spotlight: Bella Chiara Kitchen Teas

The first time I went to a kitchen tea I was about three, dragged along with my mom. The ladies played games and put the bride-to-be in a funny hat, and she got presents like fish platters shaped like fish, and mielie holders shaped like corn, and tomato sauce bottles shaped like tomatoes (what was WITH that in the ’80s?). I thought they were all mad. Fortunately, kitchen teas (bridal showers, whatever you want to call them!) have come a long way since then, but they’re still an opportunity for a bride-to-be to spend some quality time with the women in her life ahead of her big day, and I know you ladies are always looking for great ideas. So I knew I had to share it with you when I stumbled across Bella Chiara, a Cape Town-based accessories label who also host creative kitchen teas where a bride and her entourage can make lovely clay decorative items together. It’s a perfect hen activity as you get to know one another in a chilled out situation, and take something pretty home with you at the end of the day. Here’s a bit more from Claire of Bella Chiara…Read More

Inspiration Board: Polka Promise

I’ve had lots of requests from real brides recently for pastel pink and green boards – clearly this is one colour combination that isn’t going anywhere! These two colours always give me such a good feeling – they’re so balanced, but at the same time so pretty and fresh. They’re ideal for a (spring or) summer wedding, which is just what real bride Jeani will be having. She wrote to tell me of the elements they’re considering: proteas and herbs, lace, DIY details. They also want to include polka dots as a motif, which I think is super cute! The key to using something like polka dots is not to go overboard, but to use them carefully and then echo them in shape or texture. So I’ve suggested some gorgeous DIY dot garlands (Jeani can use these hanging in the ceremony area, as a backdrop to the cake table or main table, draped from the ceiling – lots of options!). I’ve also suggested a polka dot cake (how sweet and subtle is this one?), pink paper polka straws, and even a dotty dress (look closely at the image bottom left). Then the circles are reflected in elements of the protea and rose bouquet, and the fun balloon accents in the ceremony area. Other fun DIYs that Jeani and her man can try are origami heart place settings, lace-wrapped votives and jars, a pretty lacy ring dish and ribbon-tied chair backs (use this on just the bride and groom’s chairs if you don’t want to spend a fortune on ribbon). Add a pretty sash to a wedding dress, and carry that fresh green into herbs under bell jars and inside found objects like this old fashioned filing drawer. There’s lots here to play with, and it all adds up to handmade summer sweetness! Hope you like it, Jeani!
