So often when we think wedding decor we’re thinking about the reception, but today’s Best of 2013 post is all about the ceremony. Now don’t get me wrong – the most important thing happening at the ceremony IS the ceremony, but that doesn’t mean that (especially if you’re not getting married in a church) you can’t enjoy some creative licence in making it look like a fairytale. That’s just what some of our brides and grooms did this year, turning ordinary spaces into very special ones. Here they are, all in one place, to inspire!
SouthBound’s Best 2013: Bridesmaids
Yesterday we had a closer look at the gorgeous fashion choices of both our 2013 brides and grooms/groomsmen, but this morning we turn our sight to the bridesmaids. I think that dressing your ladies is a great way to bring a note of fashion and elegance to your wedding style, as well as reinforce or contrast with your colour scheme, so I love all the mismatching and innovation that’s going on with bridal party gowns right now. And of course our SBBs were no exception! SO hard to narrow this one down too, but here are the top picks from the year that was.
SouthBound’s Best 2013: Groom’s Style
You didn’t think we’d forget the boys, did you? This morning we rounded up our favourite bridal style from 2013, and this afternoon we’re passing the spotlight on to the guys, celebrating those stylish men who made your hearts leap as they stood at the end of the aisle. This is one area of wedding styling that can get overlooked (or can be gotten wrong), but your man deserves to look every bit as amazing as you do on the big day, so be sure to spare some time to help him and his boys pick out the perfect outfit and accessories. We had some super studly looks on SBB this year, reflecting some of the wider trends for dressing groomsmen, and I’ve collected my favourites here for you.
SouthBound’s Best 2013: Bridal Style
Hello lovelies! We’re continuing our countdown of my favourites from 2013 – but I think this might have been the most difficult to choose of them all! The truth is that I think every bride I feature is stunningly beautiful – not just because of the dress (although we LOVE the dresses) or the accessories or the makeup or the hair, or even because each bride shows off her own unique style and beauty on the day, but because of that special glow that just makes brides look amazing. Call it the look of love. That said, there are some brides whose sense of fashion and style just goes beyond – here are the ten looks that really blew me (and you) away this year. Each has something different and inspiring to offer – and they’re proof if ever there was one that some of the best wedding day looks come from those who aren’t afraid to bend or break the rules. It’s YOUR day. Dress YOUR way.
SouthBound’s Best 2013: Cakes
We’re continuing our week rounding up the loveliest parts of our real weddings this year, and this afternoon we’re rounding up the most delicious! Wedding cakes used to be simple, classic and white, but nowadays there’s just as much creativity that goes into this aspect as so many other areas of the wedding. There were so many gorgeous creations in our real weddings this year, but here are the ten that made the biggest impression.
SouthBound’s Best 2013: Bouquets
Hello friends! Today marks the start of our Christmas and New Year schedule – while I’ll be taking a little well-deserved break with my family, we’ll be looking back at all the highlights of a beautiful year here on SBB. For the rest of this week, I’ll be breaking down our top bouquets, bride and bridesmaid looks, groom style, cakes, reception and ceremony details, and after that we’re showcasing the Top 10 weddings for 2013, based on views, comments, Facebook likes, Pinterest pins, and so on. Whether you’ve seen them before or have only just started the planning journey, it’s a snapshot of 2013’s bridal style as well as a look at trends that have only just started developing. Be sure to click through to see the full weddings for more! Today we’re starting off with bouquets – one of my bestest things. We had some absolutely BEAUTIFUL flowers on the blog this year, and I can safely call it the Year of the Protea – be they blushing bride, king, pincushion or even carved! So you’ll see plenty of our national bloom in this roundup, as well as some other gorgeous and inspiring pieces. Congrats to all the talented floral designers who pulled these off – we have such a talented bunch of people in this industry!
Ruby Bride #3: The Stationery
Choosing our wedding stationery was daunting. The fonts! The illustrations! The envelopes! There were so many beautiful options; I had no idea where to turn. All I knew was this: we wanted something simple and beautiful.
Gideon’s dad is a hard-core corporate lawyer by day who paints stunning watercolours in his spare time and, because we both love watercolour pieces, we asked his dad to paint us a wreath to use in our wedding design. He did a stellar job and I did a quick DIY-design for our Save the Dates, which we emailed.
Ten Christmas Decor Items You Can Use At Your Wedding
Hello lovelies! Tomorrow we officially kick off our end of year blog schedule, but for this morning we’re going all Christmassy in honour of the fact that I’ll be tree trimming all day. I know that budget is a constraint for so many brides, and I can’t help but think about weddings when I see some of the decorations that are available these days – they’re definitely not of the cheese-tastic Santa’s grotto variety! With most of them being on sale at huge discounts from Boxing Day onwards, I got to thinking about how this was a good time for 2014 brides to stock up on some of their decor items in a brilliant stroke of forward planning. Some of these are more obvious, some require some creative thinking, but all of them will enhance your wedding, which doesn’t necessarily need to have a winter or a Christmas theme. Here are my Top 10 finds to look out for.
#1: CHRISTMAS LIGHTS
Real Wedding at Welgemeend {Jade & George}
Happy Friday, lovelies! And not just any Friday, but the last one at work for many of you, as the holiday season gets into gear. We’re having a bit of a holiday on SBB from next week too – there’s a full line-up of retrospective 2013 loveliness, but today is the last new real wedding we’ll feature for this year. And I can’t think of a better note to go out on, because Jade and George’s wedding is so full love and exuberance, slick suits, a beautiful custom made necklace and the cutest little red getaway car. They submitted it themselves, and I couldn’t resist sharing this stylish couple’s pics with you – they’re guaranteed to make you smile! Mads Norgaard, who just happens to be a friend of bride and groom, took these fab pictures.Read More
Pink Flamingo
Hello friends! I am winging my way back to Durbs today (hi mom, please don’t forget to pick me up at the airport!), but while I do, I have the most gorgeous little taste of inspiration to share with you. I have a minor obsession with flamingos, not sure why (might have something to do with having been Alice in Wonderland in a play once), but I absolutely love them and the elegant yet slightly kitsch tropical lounge vibe that they add to an event when used as a motif. So I was super excited to see this shoot from Absolute Collection and Abri Kruger in the latest Wedding Inspirations magazine. I mean, we’re talking gold and pink (only one of this summer’s hottest colour combos), awesome lasercut goodies, ombre stationery (love love love) and the CAKES. Seriously, I could write about those cakes (from Cakes by Wade) on their own all day. Anyway, so here’s a little sneak peek at the feature, but you’ll have to buy the magazine to see the rest. When you do, you’ll find everything from a gorgeous bridal fashion feature to ideas for using jars as wedding favours to Peggy Porschen cupcakes and alternative hen party ideas. I’ll be reading mine cover to cover on the plane!Read More
